The death toll from last week’s alleged food poisoning incident in Gauteng has risen to six.

This was after a grade one learner from Karabo Primary School died after spending a week in the ICU.

Zinhle Maama (7), Njabulo Msimango (7), Karabo Rampou (8), Monica Sathekge (6), and Isago Mabote (8), who died after allegedly eating snacks they bought from a spaza shop in Naledi.

This week alone, 35 pupils were hospitalised in Malamulele in Limpopo while 70 Grade 12 learners from Carletonville who were attending a matric camp were rushed to the hospital after displaying symptoms of stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

The Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube says It’s unclear and has been unclear whether these learners bought food from a particular shop where this was obtained, but the provinces are busy with the investigation.

On the 29th of September three children, aged between 1 and 4, died of suspected food poisoning in East London.

Police said they were still waiting for the results of the toxicology report.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who addressed mourners on Sunday called upon those involved in the investigation to work with speed to get to the bottom of this tragedy.

He asked the Consumer Commission to convene a meeting as soon as possible and to track down the suppliers and manufacturers of the foods consumed.

Lesufi urged law enforcement to supply them with the necessary forensic reports as soon as possible.
