MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate Nomadlozi Nkosi and MMC for Health and Social Services Bridget Thusi officiated the multi-sectoral Teenage Pregnancy seminar to curb the alarming increase of teenage pregnancy in Ekurhuleni.
The seminar was held at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on October 22.
According to statistics from the Gauteng Department of Health, there were 24 941 cases of deliveries and terminations of pregnancies in Gauteng in 2022–2023, a 2% increase from the previous year’s total of 24 445.
In response to these alarming statistics, Nkosi emphasised that ‘the figures underscore the urgent need for effective intervention strategies to support young people facing these challenges’.
The importance of encouraging youth to utilise the Youth Zones available at all healthcare facilities was also emphasised.

These zones are designed to facilitate access to health services and information for young people, to empower them to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health, explained Nkosi.
Echoing these sentiments was Thusi who stated that the City of Ekurhuleni, in collaboration with the Gauteng government, is committed to developing actionable strategies and policies aligned with health and wellness goals for the 2023-2028 period.
“These policies will create an environment where young individuals feel empowered to seek information and support concerning sexual and reproductive health, as well as mental health resources,” she pointed out.
The seminar can be seen as a step towards fostering a community that prioritises the health and well-being of its youth, addressing not only immediate concerns but also laying the foundation for sustainable solutions going forward.
