More than 550 suspects were arrested for various crimes this past weekend during several operations carried out in the metro.
Major-General Samuel Thine, the District Commissioner of Tshwane was at the helm of these operations, focused on high-crime areas and included patrols, compliance inspections, and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.
“During routine police actions over the weekend, which included station operations and patrols, 231 individuals were arrested for various offences such as assault, housebreaking, public drinking, driving under the influence, and armed robbery,” said spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.
On Saturday, September 7, Operation Shanela was executed in Hercules and Pretoria West.
“The operation aimed to strengthen law enforcement presence in the area by deploying additional forces and targeting wanted criminals. The operation included inspections of liquor premises and searches in hotspot areas, resulting in the arrest of 322 suspects,” Van Dyk said.
Tshwane Detective Teams arrested 235 suspects involved in serious crimes including six for murder, three for attempted murder, 11 for armed robbery, and 83 for gender-based violence (GBV) crimes.
Three crime-combatting teams were assembled and assigned to patrol the streets and surrounding areas of Pretoria-West and Hercules.
These teams inspected 13 liquor premises, leading to the closure of five illegal establishments and the confiscation of illicit liquor.
Fifty-four illegal immigrants were detained and will be deported once legal processes are finalised and two individuals were fined for the employment of illegal immigrants.
A total of 1 246 individuals and 650 vehicles were searched or inspected.
Searches were conducted at six identified premises, resulting in 23 arrests for drunk driving, and seven for public drinking.
One individual was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property when 10kg of copper valued at R5 000 was recovered on his person.
The suspect was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the metal.
Sixteen Aarto traffic infringement notices were issued, amounting to R17 750 with three vehicles being discontinued for not complying with the Road Traffic Act.
