The launch of Lufthansa’s new direct flight route from Munich to Johannesburg is expected to bring significant economic advantages to Gauteng and South Africa. This route, which began operating in early September 2024, is part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity between South Africa and key European markets, especially as the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) positions Johannesburg as a critical hub for business and tourism.
Economic Impact and Business Connectivity
According to the GDED, the direct flight is a major asset for the Gauteng economy, particularly as Munich is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe by GDP. The city is home to several international corporations in industries such as manufacturing, finance, and automotive, making it a key gateway for international business relations. This enhanced connectivity allows for easier access for companies headquartered in southern Germany, fostering economic growth between Germany and South Africa, with a specific emphasis on the Gauteng City Region .
The launch of the route during South Africa’s Tourism Month highlights the role of tourism in economic recovery. Germany has been a significant source of tourism for South Africa, with over 245,000 German tourists visiting the country in the last year alone, a noticeable increase from the previous year. The new flight offers an opportunity to further boost tourism in the province, particularly in areas like paleo-sciences, gastronomy, and sports tourism .
Expansion in Tourism and Air Routes
The reopening of this route comes after a 19-year hiatus, with Lufthansa now offering three weekly flights between the two cities. This complements existing routes such as Frankfurt to Johannesburg, giving travellers more options for connecting to Europe. The Airbus A350-900, with 293 seats across business, premium economy, and economy classes, is being used for the route . The flight not only serves business travellers but is expected to increase leisure tourism by making it easier for South African residents to explore Europe and for European tourists to visit South Africa .
This development is part of a broader effort by the Gauteng Provincial Government to recover from the loss of air routes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several new routes have been added to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport in recent months, including flights from Brazil, Zambia, and Australia, underscoring the province’s strategic focus on expanding its international connectivity .
Boosting Bilateral Trade
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has expressed excitement about the new route, emphasizing its role in bolstering bilateral trade between South Africa and Germany. The increased air traffic will likely boost job creation, expand trade opportunities, and enhance the province’s overall economic prospects .
