Gauteng DA says provincial govt wasting millions maintaining heritage monuments

JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng believes the provincial government is wasting millions of rand on maintaining heritage monuments.

The Education and Sports MEC, Matome Chiloane, disclosed in a question-and-answer session that his department spent R9.2 million on the maintenance of three heritage sites during the 2023/24 financial year.

The sites include the Kagiso Memorial, the Boipatong Memorial, and the Women’s Living Heritage Monument.

The DA’s Kingsol Chabalala said it was pointless to invest significant sums on heritage sites that offer no tangible benefits to Gauteng residents.

“We are deeply concerned that the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has, once again, wasted taxpayers’ money maintaining partially functional heritage monuments that do not benefit residents. For a long time, the DA has complained about unnecessary delays by the department in completing these monuments, which is denying our youth access to upskilling opportunities and empowerment.”
