Eleven Limpopo traffic cops arrested for corruption

Eleven traffic officers from Limpopo have been arrested on suspicion of corruption in Polokwane.

The officers allegedly took bribes from bus operators, taxi drivers and motorists travelling on the N1 between Polokwane and Musina.

The Road Traffic Management Anti-Corruption Unit’s spokesperson, Simon Zwane says the officials have been under investigation since 2022

They were nabbed during an undercover operation called “Coconut,” which targeted law enforcement officials involved in unethical and unlawful conduct on the N1.

It is alleged that the officers stopped motorists and conducted inspections, but they would demand bribes instead of issuing a traffic fine when they found faults with the vehicles or driving licenses,

“The arrest of more officials has not been ruled out at this stage as investigations continue”, Zwane said.

The suspects will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges relating to defeating the ends of justice, extortion, and soliciting bribes.
