The 17-year-old accused of murdering Overberg High School pupil Deveney Nel briefly appeared in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Western Cape police arrested the teenage boy, who is believed to be a pupil at the same school as Deveney, on Friday.

Nel, a Grade 10 pupil, was found dead inside a storeroom at the school almost two weeks ago, shortly after her mother reported her missing when she failed to show up for her school transport back home to Grabouw.

The media was barred from entering the courtroom on Monday due to the accused being underage. He also cannot be named.

He was not asked to plead and the case was postponed to 18 September.

The teenager was taken to a place of safety after his court appearance.
