Police rescue pastor and woman hijacked by ‘blue light gang’ on way to church conference

Police spokesperson Brig Motantsi Makhele said the couple’s vehicle was found in Sebokeng on Sunday but they were nowhere to be found.

“The team tracked down the couple and last night a breakthrough was made which led to the arrest of three people in Sharpeville. Further investigation by the team led to a house in Evaton where a fourth suspect was arrested. The couple were found unharmed in the house.

“Police seized multiple bank cards, a significant amount of cash and a toy gun at the address,” Makhele said.

According to him, a preliminary investigation has shown that the couple was hijacked and abducted on the road between Heibron and Sasolburg.

The suspects, aged between 31 and 41, are due to appear in court in Sasolburg on Thursday on suspicion of hijacking and kidnapping.

Makhele said the investigation is still ongoing and more arrests are expected.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said the successful rescue of the couple was the result of the quick response and tireless determination of a multi-disciplinary team.

“I am pleased to report that the victims have been found in a physically stable condition,” he said.

“We will investigate allegations of possible police officer involvement. If police officers are involved, we will take action. We urge anyone with information to come forward and help the police.”
