Msimanga presses Lesufi on lifestyle audits for Gauteng MECs

In his State of the Province Address last week, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the lifestyle audits for all provincial government heads of departments and CEOs had been completed.

Lesufi said the reports would be made public.

Speaking during the debate on the State of the Province Address, Msimanga emphasised that politicians’ lifestyles should also be audited to ensure transparency and accountability.

“I heard you speaking about the lifestyle audits that have been done on senior managers,” Msimanga said.

“My question is, why are politicians not included in the lifestyle audits as well? Can I ask that they be included and then put those results in public? We must know what are those results telling us. You have made the commitment about the releasing of the official lifestyle audits, but we are asking you to release those that are of the politicians.”

Msimanga also raised concerns about the failure to protect whistleblowers.

“One of the biggest challenges that we are sitting with is the whistleblowers in Gauteng are still not protected, Babita [Deokaran] is one those. We are still owed answers in terms of what happened to that poor woman.

“There are so many people who want to come out and report on things that are wrong in the government, but they are scared of doing that because there is no clear plan in terms of protecting whistleblowers.”
