The water crisis in Mpumalanga Province has taken a turn for the worse, with dam levels plummeting to alarming lows.
According to the report that was released on Monday, August 12, from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), the average dam levels have dropped from 91.2% to 90.7%.
This drastic decline has sparked fears of severe water shortages, leaving residents and businesses on high alert.
The report reveals that all three districts in the province have experienced declines in water levels. The Nkangala District, including Witbank Dam, has dropped from 93.9% to 93.4%.
The Witbank Dam, a crucial water source for the region, has also experienced a decline, from 94.4% to 94.0%.
DWS has asked the public to use water wisely and sparingly, pointing out that South Africa is a dry and water-scarce country.
The drop in water levels is a concerning trend, especially in a region already feeling the effects of climate change.
Residents should take steps to conserve water, by correcting leaks, installing water-efficient appliances, and minimising their overall water consumption.
DWS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the water levels in the province. In the meantime, residents are urged to take responsibility for their water usage and help mitigate the effects of this worrying trend.
