Lesufi says sorry to unemployed Nasi Ispani beneficiaries

The provincial government initially hired the 32,000 teaching assistants, expecting their contracts would be extended until 2025.

However, they were left in the lurch when the promised extension failed to materialise.

Speaking during his State of the Province Address in Kathlehong on Thursday, Lesufi expressed regret over the outcome and vowed to intensify the Nasi Ispani program.

“We want to apologise to them for the abrupt termination, but we want to assure them, in the new investment opportunities that we announce today, we’ll open new opportunities for them and the young people of our province, so they don’t rely on temporary jobs but permanent jobs,” Lesufi said.

The Department of Education in Gauteng had previously refuted claims that permanent positions were promised to contracted staffers and that all participants were made aware of the short-term nature of the position.
