Joburg DA calls for parties to support a bid to dissolve the city council

JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Joburg is calling on political parties in the metro to support its bid to dissolve the city council.

The party announced intentions to table a motion for the dissolution of the house during an extraordinary council meeting scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The sitting has been called to elect a new mayor following the resignation of Al-Jama-Ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda.

The DA believes electing a new mayor will do the City of Joburg, more harm than good, as it believes the best shot at stabilising the metro is dissolving the municipal council.

The party would however need a two-thirds majority to successfully dissolve the house, which will be a daunting task considering it doesn’t have the number to pass the motion.

DA leader in Joburg Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said that there is no assurance that service delivery will improve if a new mayor is elected.

“Currently, Johannesburg’s residents have to watch from the sidelines as service delivery continues to crumble. Many have no water or electricity or refuse removal.”

The African National Congress said that it will nominate its regional leader Dada Morero for the mayoral seat, while the DA does not plan on entering the race for the city’s highest office.
