Four people were killed in a collision between a train and a bakkie in the Northern Cape.

The Railway Safety Regulator said the crash occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Tsantsabane and Groenwater level crossing, just outside Postmasburg.

The Regulator said the deceased were occupants of the bakkie which collided with a Transnet freight train.

Inspectors were on site for a preliminary investigation.

Meanwhile, the Regulator said a preliminary probe into another crash which left six school learners dead, has found that the driver of a scholar vehicle did not “adhere to the road signage” at the Arnot level crossing in the Steve Tshwete Municipality.

The railway safety regulator said this crucial detail underscores a significant aspect of the investigation and the ongoing challenges at railway level crossings.

“Further investigations will be undertaken by the rail operator and road safety authorities to delve deeper into the circumstances of the accident.

“The RSR will collaborate closely with these entities to ensure that comprehensive corrective actions are implemented, aimed at enhancing safety measures and preventing future occurrences,” the Regulator said.
