Five people were killed in a car crash near Marquard in the Free State on Friday evening.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesman Simon Zwane said the accident happened on the R707 just before 10pm.

A BMW and a Kia collided head-on, killing two men and three women.

“According to the information, the black BMW was driving on the R707 from Senekal towards Marquard, and the white Kia was driving from Marquard towards Senekal when they collided head-on, approximately 4 km from Marquard,” said Zwane.

“The cause of the crash will be the subject of the ongoing investigation.”

Police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

He said the BMW had a license plate registered in Lesotho and asked anyone with reasonable suspicion that a relative was a victim of the accident to contact Marquard Police Station Commander, Warrant Officer Chaotsane, on 082 466 8266.
