The four suspects arrested in Gauteng for the kidnapping of a Free State couple.

The kidnapped pastor and his wife are safe at home.

This was confirmed by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on Tuesday, August 27, a day after the couple was rescued.

The couple was kidnapped on Friday, August 23, by three suspects posing as police officers.

According to Mchunu, Pastor Phillip Mashudu (55) and his wife Elsie Matlou Mashudu (54) disappeared on Friday, August 23, 2024, after they were arrested by suspects posing as police officers in full uniform.

“At that time, the couple was on their way from Bethlehem to Paris,” said Mchunu.

Giving details of the rescue operation, Mchunu said there was a swift response and tireless determination by a multidisciplinary team that followed credible leads day and night, which eventually led to the location of the victims on the evening of Monday, August 26.

“I am pleased to report that the victims have been found in a physically stable condition. This incident is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in our ongoing efforts to maintain public safety. However, it is also a testament to what can be achieved when our police service acts with determination, diligence and integrity. We extend our gratitude to all teams involved; your unwavering dedication and professionalism have not only led to the successful resolution of this case but have also restored a sense of safety and trust within our community,” Mchunu said.

“The four suspects, aged between 31 and 41, have been arrested and will appear in the Sasolburg District Court on Thursday, 29 August 2024, charged with hijacking and kidnapping,” he said.

Mchunu also condemned this recent incident and confirmed that they would investigate allegations of possible police officer involvement.

“If there are police officers involved, we will take action,” he said.

The family representative, Dr. Azwihangwi Maumela, expressed her gratitude for the exceptional service of the police officers.

Free State Police spokesperson Brigadier Motansi Makhele said police found the couple’s vehicle in Sebokeng on Sunday, August 25, but they were nowhere to be found.

“Following further investigation, the provincial task team arrested three suspects in Sharpville. The team left no stone unturned in their search and tracing of the couple and last night a breakthrough was made which led to the arrest of the three,” Makhele said.

He further revealed that the investigation also led to a house in Everton, where the fourth suspect was arrested and the couple were rescued.

“Officers seized multiple bank cards at the address, as well as a significant amount of cash and a toy gun,” police said.
