Youth League president calls Gauteng ‘golden boys’ untouchable

By Doreen Mokgolo

ANC Youth League president Collen Malatji has taken a swipe at Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi for appointing untouchable Gauteng “golden boys” as MECs in his provincial cabinet.

These include Lebogang Maile, who has served in various MEC positions since 2010 covering sports, arts, culture and recreation and who was recently appointed as the MEC for finance and economic development.

Jacob Mamabolo, who has served in various MEC positions since 2014, was recently appointed to the MEC for infrastructure development and cooperative governance and traditional affairs.

Malatji was addressing residents and party members during a Nelson Mandela programme in Bekkersdal on the West Rand on Monday.

Malatji said: “We know there are golden boys in Gauteng whom no one can touch; it is always obvious that they are going to be deployed as MEC.

“We don’t know who they represent as they don’t have a constituency – theirs is to drink expensive whiskies and smoke cigars.

“How can four of the deployees be from the Joburg region, leaving Sedibeng and West Rand and the Youth League as if they are the stepchildren of the party?”

Malatji said the ANC is sitting at below 40% in the recent election results because of them. These MECs were nowhere to be found during campaigns but drinking champagne in the suites with slay queens during rallies, he said.

“They are failing to deliver services to the people of Gauteng because they don’t know the people or the struggles they face daily.

“As we honour Nelson Mandela, the party leaders and members must go back to basics. Our people are tired of celebrity leaders, and they want people they can have access to.

“Leaders must stop buying suites and sitting in air-conditioned offices. Start being on the ground and servicing the people in your constituencies,” he said.

The young lion’s president said they will forgive the premier for the mistake but he needs to rectify it.
