Tuesday’s weather: Storm surges, heavy downpours, snow forecast in several regions across SA | News24

The South African Weather Service has forecast storm surges, heavy downpours and snow in several regions as cold fronts continue to sweep across the country.

Impact-based warnings

An Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain leading to flooding and possible mudslides has been issued for the City of Cape Town, as well as the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipalities in the Western Cape.

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for disruptive rain leading to flooding and damage of roads and bridges over the West Coast, northern parts of the Cape Winelands and western parts of Overberg districts in the Western Cape.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds resulting in damage to property, difficult driving conditions and communication and power interruptions has been issued for the western and central interiors of the Eastern Cape.

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for damaging winds over the central and eastern parts of the Western Cape and southern parts of the Namakwa District Municipality in the Northern Cape, resulting in damage to property, difficult driving conditions, communication and power interruptions, and injuries due to flying debris.

A Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves is expected between Port Edwards and Durban and between Lamberts Bay and Cape Agulhas, leading to the disruption of small harbours and/or ports, risk to small and medium vessels of dragging anchors, as well as danger to life from large waves along coastal routes and communities.

An Orange Level 6 warning for damaging waves expected between Table Bay and Struisbaai.

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for damaging waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay.

A Yellow Level 6 warning for a storm surge leading flooding of low-lying coastal areas and disruptions to beach front activities is expected between Plettenberg Bay and East London. 

A Yellow Level 4 warning for a storm surge leading to localised flooding of low-lying coastal areas and disruptions to beach front activities is expected between East London and Mazeppa Bay.

Advisories

A series of significant cold fronts are expected to affect the southern parts of the country this week until 12 July.

The public and small stock farmers are advised intermittent heavy downpours, snowfalls, cold conditions, strong coastal and interior winds and rough seas can be expected.

The weather in your region

Gauteng will be fine and cold.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

Fine and cold to cool temperatures are forecast in Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

The North West can expect fine and cold conditions with morning frost.

Fine and cold conditions with morning frost are also expected in the Free State, but light snow and showers are forecast in the far south at first where it will be partly cloudy.

The Northern Cape will be fine and cold in the eastern parts of the province, but cool temperatures are expected in the north.

Cloudy and extremely cold conditions are forecast for the rest of the province, with isolated showers and rain in the southern interior where snowfalls are likely.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh south-westerly, becoming light and variable from the afternoon.

Cloudy to partly cloudy conditions and extremely cold to cold temperatures are expected in the Western Cape.

Widespread showers and rain are forecast over the south-western parts of the province but isolated to scattered along the west coast and central interior.

The wind along the coast will be a strong north-westerly, becoming westerly along the south coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is low.

The western half of the Eastern Cape will have morning frost over the interior with partly cloudy and cool conditions.

Isolated rain is expected along the south coast and adjacent interior.

The wind along the coast will be a fresh to strong north-westerly turning westerly in the afternoon.

Cloudy and cold conditions are forecast in the eastern half of the province with morning snowfalls north of the escarpment, otherwise it will be fine and cool.

The wind along the coast will be a moderate to fresh westerly, becoming north-easterly north of the Kei Mouth in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal will be fine and cool but cold in places in the west.

The wind along the coast will be a light to moderate westerly to north-westerly until the morning.

Otherwise, a moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly is expected, becoming strong in the south, spreading northwards by late afternoon.
