Three men were arrested for contravening the National Credit Act after they were found to be in possession of a large number of ID documents, as well as bank and Sassa cards.

These arrests in Vosburg in the Northern Cape followed after members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) received information that three shop owners in the town were in possession of these personal documents and cards of individuals.

On Thursday, 27 June, a team comprising of the police’s Crime Intelligence and De Aar Public Order Policing units raided shops at three separate locations, leading to the arrests.

Police confiscated 90 identity documents, which include green ID books, Smart ID cards, temporary IDs and birth certificates, 60 Sassa cards, 415 bank cards and 1 SAPS appointment certificate.

ID documents, as well as bank and Sassa cards, were found in three shops in Vosburg.

The three suspects are facing charges of Contravention of the National Credit Act for allegedly running illegal micro cash loan businesses, and will appear in court, said Lt. Col. Sergio Kock, police spokesperson.

Illegal, criminal offence

According to the National Credit Regulator (NCR), it is illegal and a criminal offence for any credit provider or shop owner to ask you to leave your ID, bank, or Sassa cards, or any of your legal documentation with them.

If you are asked by any credit provider or shop owner to leave with them any such cards or documents or pin codes, it is a criminal offence, and you must report them to the SAPS and NCR.

The NCR reminds all citizens that it is immoral for a money lender to loan against a Sassa grant.
