Teen pregnancy in the spotlight after learner gives birth at school

It remains unclear how a grade 10 learner gave birth in the toilet at Molautsi Secondary School in Blood River outside Polokwane, but the department of education in Limpopo has indicated that the learner and the newborn baby are in the hands of health professionals.

In a statement, the department confirms that the incident occurred on Monday this week and that the learner was alone when she went into labour.

In 2018, the school recorded the highest number of pregnancies, with 27 learners falling pregnant.

Meanwhile, the Limpopo Department of Social Development spokesperson Joshua Kwapa says although the education department handles matters involving pregnant learners in school unless they are asked to intervene, they too have programs in place to prevent teenage pregnancy.

Kwapa says to mitigate against the rise in teenage pregnancy, they have active programs such as Chomi, targeting girls and boys aged between of 10 and 14 years as well as YOLO, targeting those aged between 15 and 24.
