R355,000 for “artists”, R96,000 for “accreditation” of mourners, R70,000 for decoration, R59,000 for red roses, R13,000 for “draping” and R9,900 for the hire of artificial grass.

That is the amount the Free State government spent on the funeral and memorial service of former education minister Tate Makgoe, according to a report by the Public Protector.

The office of the Free State Premier, Director General Kopung Ralikontsane, defended itself in the report by denying any wrongdoing, saying supply chain management had followed up on the RFPs correctly.
