Shock: Pupil gives birth in school toilet! | Daily Sun

A pupil gave birth in the toilets at Molautsi Secondary School in Blood River outside Polokwane.

A GRADE 10 pupil from Molautsi Secondary School in Blood River outside Polokwane, Limpopo, gave birth in the school’s bathrooms on Monday, 22 July.

It’s reported the pupil was alone when she went into labour. The Limpopo Department of Education alleged the school was unaware of the pupil’s pregnancy.

“We can confirm that a grade 10 pupil from Molautsi Secondary School gave birth in the school’s toilet on Monday. Teachers were not aware of the pupil’s pregnancy. Parents of the new mother said the teenager was seven months pregnant. We have a policy in place called teenage pregnancy and management in school which was adopted in 2022.

“The policy entails, among other things, when a pupil falls pregnant parents should inform the school about the pregnancy. If parents fail to go to school, the pupil will have to consult a medical doctor to obtain a letter after six months of pregnancy. The letter will then serve as confirmation that the pupil is still within her safe pregnancy period to attend school,” said Suzan Shitlhelana, chief education specialist in the Limpopo Education Department.

Shitlhelana said the department will investigate this matter.

“We want to understand why the parents of the pupil in question failed to inform the school about the pregnancy,” said Shitlhelana.

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) in Limpopo reacted with dismay to the incident.

“We would like to firstly call on our pupils to take their education seriously. We call on them to practise what we call abstinence. We’re not happy with what happened at Molautsi Secondary because it portrays us as people who don’t value education. When parents know their children are pregnant, they must report it,” said Cosas co-ordinator, Shirley Ngoato.
