Free State-born actress and activist against gender-based violence (GBV), Jane Mpholo, has been recognised for her contributions to the community and her advocacy against GBV. She has been nominated for this year’s Fabulous Woman Awards.

Mpholo is one of three finalists for the Fabulous Women End Gender-Based Violence Award. The other two are Sharon Harripersadh and Khethiwe Nene.

The winners of the nine categories in the competition will be announced on Saturday 3 August at a glittering event in Sandton. This year marks the 12th edition of the awards, which celebrate women and girls who are making a positive difference in their communities.

The versatile actress is accelerating her activism work through her eponymous entity, Jane Mpholo Pty Ltd., registered in 2022.

“I never expected this, as this is happening at a very early stage of the business and its social impact. I see this as an affirmation of positively touching lives and I feel inspired, regardless of the outcome of the final,” said Mpholo.

The sponsor stated that Mpholo is recognised and applauded for her remarkable contributions to the arts and her tireless advocacy against gender-based violence through the transformative power of theatre and the performing arts.

Mpholo’s activism is one of resilience and triumph over tragedy, including a rape experience at age 13, when she was raped by a then 17-year-old boy. She said she has lost both parents to the HIV epidemic.

Mpholo’s previous recognitions include a kykNET Fiesta nomination and selection as a finalist in the 200 Young SA Trailblazers competition for Mail and Guardianand News24’s Young Mandelas of the Future Award for 2023.
