A COLLABORATIVE effort to enhance safety and security in Nelson Mandela Bay has launched, dubbed Eyes and Ears.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), Agri Eastern Cape, Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA), and the Private Security Industry (PSI) are joining forces to share resources and information, creating a co-ordinated response to crime.

Lead for the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Safety and Security Task Team, Alfie Jay, emphasised the importance of stakeholder collaboration.

“The strategic involvement of the right stakeholders to develop a common understanding of the highest impact on safety and security issues affecting business and the city is what has led to the establishment of this initiative in Nelson Mandela Bay. The formulation of a collective approach to finding practical and sustainable solutions through sharing resources to take collective action, is the key to unlocking an enabling environment which promotes sustainable economic development,” said Jay.

The initiative aims to enhance situational awareness, operational response, and information sharing between stakeholders, focusing on crime hotspots, violent crimes, and TRIO crimes. Jay highlighted the importance of proximity to incidents.

“The PSI’s proximity provides responsive situational information, enabling the SAPS to appropriately and rapidly respond.”

Agri Eastern Cape Operations Manager, Jason Kümm expressed their commitment to assisting the establishment of the operational centre and guiding the steering committee.

“The metro will benefit from the implementation of the Eyes and Ears project, strengthening our efforts to prevent and react to crimes,” said Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata.
