POLOKWANE – Limpopo Impalas honoured their standout players from the 2023/24 cricket season during a glittering awards ceremony held in Polokwane on June 22.
Sakkie Mabala Kwakwa, the president of the Limpopo Impala Cricket Board, encouraged the players to maintain their dedication to achieving their goals.
“The last time we produced a national player was Dale Steyn. We aim to see more players from our structure in the national cricket team. We have put measures in place to enable players to achieve that goal,” Kwakwa stated.
Kwakwa expressed satisfaction with the development of cricket in the province.
“Limpopo cricket is moving forward. We are a province of progress, and there is a future in cricket here. We were crowned champions of the Cricket South Africa T20 Challenge in April, our first major trophy. We hope to see more of our teams winning other championships. Congratulations to all the winners, and we wish them well in the next season,” he added.
Tommy Phiri, CEO of Limpopo Impalas Cricket, highlighted the organisation’s recent achievements.
“We are pleased with the strides we have made over the past few years. Our goal is to stay relevant in the market and collaborate with our stakeholders. Winning the Cricket South Africa T20 Challenge was a massive feat for us. We have brought in new players for the upcoming season with the intention to compete and retain the trophy,” Phiri said.
At the ceremony, Ruan Haasbroek, captain of the Limpopo Impalas men’s team, was named player of the year and players’ player of the year. Dimakatso Tsotetsi received the women cricketer of the year award for the Limpopo Impalas female team.
Don Radebe, the leading bowler with 30 wickets in the Cricket South Africa T20 challenge, was honoured with the bowler of the year award.
