Deadline for Free State Sports Awards nominations extended

The 2024 Free State Sports Awards have attracted so much public interest that the nomination deadline has been extended until Sunday (21/7).

“This extension is intended to provide space for additional nominations, ensuring a comprehensive representation of diverse sporting achievements,” said Tankiso Zola, communications manager of the Ministry of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

This prestigious event celebrates athletes, administrators, volunteers and media personnel from the Free State, recognising their outstanding achievements in various roles and their efforts at local, national and international levels.

The awards are designed to recognise those who have made outstanding contributions both on and off the pitch. Categories include awards for individuals, men, women, people with disabilities, continental competitors, federations, schools, indigenous games, media and community sport builders.

The Free State Sports Awards underline the province’s passionate sporting spirit by honouring those who keep the enthusiasm for sport alive among the people of the Free State.

To be eligible for nomination, nominees’ performances must have occurred between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024:

  • Sports Manager of the Year
  • Sportsman of the Year
  • Sportsman of the Year with a Disability
  • Sportswoman of the Year
  • Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability
  • Team of the year
  • Newcomer of the year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Volunteer of the year
  • Indigenous Games Team of the Year
  • Provincial Federation of the Year
  • Recreational Body of the Year
  • Photographer of the year
  • Sports Journalist of the Year
  • Sportswoman of the year
  • People’s Choice Sportswoman of the Year
  • School team of the year
  • Development School Team of the Year
  • Technical Officer of the Year
  • MEC’s ​​​​Excellence Award
  • The Lifetime Achiever Award from MEC
  • Posthumous award from MEC

This is the final call for sports federations, recreational organisations, school sports organisations, media companies and individuals to participate by submitting their nominations for the best performing sports personnel, particularly in the following categories:

  • Sportsman of the Year with a Disabled Sports Journalist of the Year
  • Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability
  • Recreational Body of the Year
  • Team of the year
  • School team of the year
  • Volunteer of the year
  • Development School Team of the Year
  • Indigenous Games Team of the Year
