The Democratic Alliance in the Free State welcomes the relocation of the Marumo Gallants football team to the Free State provincial capital, Bloemfontein.

Residents of the Free State and the province’s many die-hard football fans have been calling for the return of a Premier League football team from the Free State for years. Our province has a rich history of producing excellent footballers, team coaches and even more exceptionally loyal supporters.

The economic and social value of the game of football, and sports in general, cannot be underestimated. The DA emphasises the importance of sports in uplifting, strengthening and enriching the lives of our citizens. Sports also play a significant role in promoting healthy living, social cohesion and nation building. The economic impact of sports on our province is significant, as evidenced by several other sporting events, which have brought major economic investment to the city. We trust that the Marumo Gallants will also bring much needed economic stimulus and entertainment to the province.

The Democratic Alliance hopes that the 7th Administration will prioritize growth in the sports, culture and tourism sectors, which have huge potential in the Free State. Investment in public infrastructure such as our stadiums, roads and transport networks will encourage more sports teams and events in the province.

The DA will continue to promote investment and involvement in sports, arts and culture in the Free State, in order to create opportunities for all residents of the province, stimulate economic growth and ensure the development of our future sports activities.
