Children more likely to be subjected to violence during human tracking: UN

According to the Global Report on Trafficking, a third of all victims of human trafficking are children, and the majority are girls. 

It released the statistics on Tuesday to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Gloria de Gee is from the Durban-based Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre, which helps survivors of human trafficking and other forms of abuse.

She says human trafficking, as well as the large number of children who go missing, remain a serious problem in South Africa.

Gee says the internet has become a tool for prowlers who use social media to gain access to children

“Families need to cut off or stop certain things that their child shouldn’t be able to watch – it is a danger, and it is where they are implementing and doing all that they want to do, abducting children and filling their heads with nonsense.”
