83 patients evacuated due to fire in Bloemfontein hospital

A fire that started outside the children’s ward and spread to other floors forced the evacuation of 83 patients from the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein.

The Free State Health Department said the fire, which started at 3.20pm on Sunday, destroyed trees and spread to the first and second floors of the hospital.

Staff, assisted by private and government ambulance personnel and members of neighborhood associations, evacuated the patients to a safe place outside the hospital, Stanley Schimper of Trauma Response Africa told Arrive Alive.

Members of the Mangaung Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire, assisted by members of Fire Ops SA.

A medical triage department was set up and patients were transported by ambulance to other hospitals in the Mangaung region.

No one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
