Western Cape residents urged to upgrade prepaid meters before the November deadline

The Western Cape government urges residents to upgrade their prepaid electricity and water meters before the November 24 deadline to prevent blackouts. Provincial Finance MEC Mireille Wenger announced that 88% of meters are updated, with Berg River and Cape Agulhas municipalities fully switched over. Wenger emphasized the urgency to complete the process to avoid what she compared to severe tax cuts for many households and businesses. Western Cape Premier Alan Winde reaffirmed the provincial Energy Council’s commitment to collaborating with Eskom to tackle electricity issues. The council discussed strategies with Eskom, which provided updates on recent mass outages and ongoing renovations at the Koeberg power station aimed at extending its operation by 20 years. Koeberg’s Unit 1 has been operational since mid-November and is nearing final licensing. Unit 2, currently offline for renovations, is slated to be back by September 30.
