Vodacom is spending R400 million to upgrade its network in the Free State, NCape

Vodacom Central Region is substantially boosting its network in the Free State and Northern Cape, spending over R400 million this financial year to enhance 3G and 4G coverage, currently at 99% and 98.2% respectively. This investment aims to improve connectivity, especially in rural areas. Over the last two years, Vodacom has invested more than R1 billion in the region, expanding broadband coverage to previously unconnected communities. In 2023/24, R250 million will focus on radio access network projects, while R150 million will enhance transmission networks, including microwave and fiber. The region plans to launch more than 30 new rural sites and additional 5G locations across numerous municipalities. To counter widespread outages and maintain connectivity during load shedding, Vodacom is also investing R120 million in energy projects. According to Managing Executive Evah Mthimunye, these efforts aim to build a digitally inclusive society and contribute to sustainable economic growth by connecting more communities to the internet.
