Villagers from Limpopo enter into battle for a tarred road

Residents of Khakhala, Gawula, Mahlathi, Ndindani, and Hlomela in Greater Giyani, Limpopo, are demanding paved roads, specifically the D3810 gravel road, which they recently blocked in protest. Their action comes after Mopani Mayor Pule Shayi’s canceled visit to Ndindani to address local traffic concerns. Residents argue that meetings and promises fall short; they need tangible improvements, particularly a paved road. United under the Limpopo Concern team, the community insists their plight be addressed or they will bar officials from their areas. Despite rumors of discussions on water issues, residents remain skeptical and determined. The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) clarified that while the D3810 is a provincial road, they have been tasked with its upgrade. A tender for this project is expected to be awarded by May 2024. The community has reached out to higher authorities, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, emphasizing the urgency and political stakes involved.
