“Those poor kids!”: South Africans saddened by initiation deaths

The Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders is probing the deaths of four initiates, three of whom perished in illegal initiation schools during the winter season that began in late May 2024. The fatalities occurred in Mzamomhle near Gonubie, Ntafufu near Port St Johns, and Butterworth. Nkosi Mpumalanga Gwadiso, the Speaker of the House, condemned those failing to follow proper initiation procedures, attributing the tragedies to illegal practices. On social media, many expressed anger and called for accountability. In Gauteng, two boys died and over 100 others were rescued from fake initiation schools, with authorities reuniting the children with their families. The winter initiation season in Gauteng starts on June 15 and ends on July 8, 2024. This situation highlights ongoing concerns over the safety and regulation of initiation practices in South Africa.
