Thirty years after democracy, fed-up residents of the Northern Cape are longing for more

In the Emthanjeni Local Municipality of Northern Cape, the ANC saw an unexpected rise in support between the 2016 and 2021 local government elections, defying the national trend. Despite this, De Aar, the largest city in the municipality, remains plagued by issues such as unemployment and inadequate infrastructure. Residents like Siyamthanda Gwegwe, who has struggled to find steady employment since graduating in 2013, express dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. While local ANC officials claim improvements in water supply and road conditions, many residents dispute these claims. Meanwhile, in Olifantshoek, a new political organization, the Northern Cape Communities Movement (NCCM), led by Shepherd Mines, has emerged. Mines, a former ANC Youth League treasurer, criticizes existing parties for failing to address local issues, particularly in healthcare. With elections approaching, he aims to challenge the ANC’s dominance, reflecting a growing desire for change among voters.
