The Mpumalanga gas field generates electricity, a first for South Africa

Australian energy firm Kinetiko, listed on the ASX, recently achieved a milestone by generating power from land gas in Amersfoort, Mpumalanga. On May 5, a single well in the Korhaan cluster, dubbed ‘The Beast,’ successfully powered a 1.2 MW gas generator, marking a first for South Africa. This trial aims to aid South Africa’s shift toward renewable energy, with Kinetiko planning to develop gas projects across Mpumalanga, Free State, and KwaZulu Natal.

Partnering with FFS Refiners under a non-binding agreement, Kinetiko intends to co-develop and finance these gas fields. This successful trial paves the way for a larger LNG production cluster of about 30 wells, in collaboration with South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation. Kinetiko boasts rights to a six trillion cubic feet gas resource, dwarfing PetroSA’s Mossgas at 1.5 tcf. Post-trial, Kinetiko and FFS aim to continue their partnership, leveraging FFS’s ties with micro LNG specialists, Galileo Technologies.
