The Eastern Cape still has the highest unemployment rate in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG – The Eastern Cape maintains the highest unemployment rate among South Africa’s nine provinces, as per the latest Quarterly Labor Force Survey by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). Following closely is the North West province. Notably, Eastern Cape and North West both exceed a 40% unemployment rate, surpassing the national rate of 32.9%. Stats SA’s director of labor statistics, Dihlolelo Phoshoko, highlighted employment growth in KwaZulu-Natal (35,000 jobs), Gauteng (26,000 jobs), and Northern Cape (4,000 jobs). Conversely, employment declined in several provinces, including Western Cape (down 17,000), North West (down 13,000), Mpumalanga (down 8,000), Eastern Cape (down 4,000), and Limpopo (down 3,000), while the Free State saw no change.
