Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, celebrating its tenth anniversary, recently secured a spot among the top ten coolest universities as per the Sunday Times GenNext Awards 2023. This acknowledgment, revealed at the 19th annual GenNext Awards, reflects the trendy and inspiring choices of South African youth. On April 6, Northern Cape students attended SPU’s open day, exploring state-of-the-art facilities and learning about various niche programs. The event kicked off with a Vice-Chancellor’s Breakfast, promoting dialogue between secondary school principals and university leaders. Vice Chancellor Prof. Andrew Crouch highlighted SPU’s expansion in regions like Upington and Springbok, emphasizing the university’s dedication to knowledge creation and social justice.
SPU has notably grown over a decade, graduating its first master’s students this year and launching new research centers. The university will host its largest graduation ceremony on April 20, with over 800 students receiving their degrees, marking a significant milestone in its history.
