Six dead and hundreds evacuated due to flooding in the Eastern Cape

Tragic flooding in the Eastern Cape over the weekend claimed nine lives, with one person still missing. Provincial spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya confirmed rescue operations are ongoing after a baby girl and a man were among the victims. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has conducted 55 operations, rescuing around 70 people. Over 500 residents have been evacuated from areas like Kariega, Blue Horizon Bay, and Seaview, though some refuse to leave due to concerns for their belongings.

The South African Weather Service had issued a level 6 yellow warning, predicting high winds, snowfall, and further flooding across several provinces. Severe thunderstorms were also forecasted for Gauteng. Flooding has complicated the evacuation process, with relief organization Gift of the Givers facing challenges due to blocked drains and high water levels. The South African National Defense Force has deployed helicopters, while volunteer groups are actively assisting with rescue efforts. Previous floods in 2023 already resulted in fatalities and infrastructure damage.
