Seven individuals were apprehended on Monday by the Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation Team in the Western Cape, suspected of being involved in an abalone poaching syndicate. The arrests took place in the Cape Peninsula, Overberg, and Hessequa during coordinated search operations across the province. Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani explained that the warrants were executed by a multi-disciplinary team. This team included members from the Hawks, as well as the police public order unit and the anti-gang unit from the Overberg district. This significant bust forms part of an ongoing effort to curb illegal abalone poaching in the region.
