Scatec unveils 540 MW Kenhardt solar park in the Northern Cape of South Africa

Scatec has inaugurated the Kenhardt solar farm in South Africa’s Northern Cape, boasting a 540 MW capacity. CEO Terje Pilskog, at the April 18 opening ceremony, highlighted the project’s successful integration into the local grid, showcasing Scatec’s dedication to the South African market. The hybrid project includes 225 MW battery storage and 1.1 GWh capacity, making it one of the largest globally. Spread across 879 hectares, the site features one million solar panels and 456 battery units, each weighing 30 tons. The construction phase employed 2,600 workers, mostly South African, including many women. Pilskog lauded the team for completing the project in 18 months while maintaining high safety standards. The project supports South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program and operates under a 20-year agreement with Eskom, supplying 150 MW continuously. Key financial backers like Standard Bank and Old Mutual were crucial in realizing this energy milestone.
