Rising cases of CIT robberies: N6 in the Eastern Cape reopened after CIT attack

A recent heist on the N6 road between Stutterheim and East London exposed severe security flaws in financial transport services in South Africa. Robbers used an articulated truck and explosives to breach an armored vehicle, highlighting the increasing boldness and sophistication of such crimes. This incident led to a temporary 30-kilometer road closure while authorities investigated.

Security experts urge a comprehensive review of protocols, calling for better surveillance, stronger armored vehicles, and stricter route planning. With cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies rising, there is mounting pressure on law enforcement and security firms to upgrade their measures swiftly.

Local Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose emphasized the seriousness of the situation, thanking the response team and motorists for their cooperation. Meanwhile, security expert Sello Mathibe stressed the urgent need for improved CIT security protocols. As CIT heists become more frequent, the industry is scrambling to form task forces to tackle the problem effectively.
