Rand Water is giving the Mpumalanga municipality 30 days to pay its R386 million debt

Rand Water has issued an ultimatum to the Victor Khanye Local Municipality in Mpumalanga, demanding payment of an outstanding debt of over R386 million within 30 days or face a 20% reduction in bulk drinking water services. The municipality has been struggling to settle its bill since 2019, accumulating a debt of R386,947,508.31 due by March 30. Rand Water emphasized that the municipality’s failure to pay violates the Bulk Water Supply Contract (BWSC) and stated that previous attempts to recover the debt have been unsuccessful. The notice clearly indicated that if the debt is not settled within the specified timeframe, the utility will exercise its legal and contractual rights to limit water services by 20%.
