Political parties in the Northern Cape promise election rules | News24

At the Northern Cape Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Code of Conduct Pledge Ceremony, political parties gathered to sign a commitment to fair play in the upcoming elections. The event, held at Kimberley’s Flamingo Casino on April 18, saw participation from representatives of 31 parties. A notable moment was when a representative from the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) confidently declared their intent to govern the province, prompting murmurs among attendees.

Violet Phatshoane, deputy judge president, and Dr. Tumelontle Thiba, provincial election officer, oversaw the ceremony. Dr. Thiba urged parties to adhere to election principles and refrain from campaigning during the pledge. Despite this, some used the platform for political statements. Boipelo Jarvis from Knesset claimed the party’s plan to take over the province and restore the royal status of indigenous peoples.

Masego Sheburi, IEC’s deputy head of electoral operations, emphasized the importance of tolerance, fair campaigning, and the legal consequences of violations.
