Pesticides pollute the Western Cape’s rivers all year round

Research has revealed that farm workers and their children in the Western Cape are exposed to harmful pesticides banned in Europe. These chemicals persist year-round in the Berg, Krom, and Hex Rivers, potentially contaminating groundwater. Studies conducted by Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town identified higher concentrations of pesticides, such as imidacloprid and chlorpyrifos, raising environmental and health concerns.

Particularly alarming is the discovery that these pesticides affect children’s neurodevelopment, leading to poorer brain function, attention deficits, and lower cognitive performance. The widespread use of such pesticides in South Africa, despite bans elsewhere, underscores a troubling double standard, especially given that much of the produce is exported to the EU. Groundwater contamination from these chemicals poses a continuous risk, necessitating urgent action to safeguard public health and the environment.
