MTN will set up 100 new 5G locations in Limpopo, Mpumalanga

MTN is intensifying its 5G network expansion in South Africa, specifically targeting provinces like Mpumalanga and Limpopo. The company plans to introduce 100 new 5G sites across these regions, adding to the 65 already active in Mpumalanga by 2023 and the 56 in Limpopo by 2023. This move aims to extend the reach of 5G beyond economic hubs like Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, promising enhanced connectivity, especially in rural areas.

Despite obstacles like high costs and load-shedding, the 5G rollout is expected to bring significant socio-economic benefits. MTN is countering challenges with resilience measures, such as backup power for sites. Vandals continue to pose a risk, with over 300 incidents recorded in both provinces’ first quarter of 2024. However, improvements have been noted, with resilient network sites achieving over 98% availability. MTN’s efforts aim to bridge connectivity gaps, fostering regional development and digital inclusion.
