Mpumalanga agripreneurs are leading the aquaponics charge into Africa

Initially uninterested in agriculture, entrepreneur Lliam Roach’s perspective shifted during the Covid pandemic, leading him to discover aquaponics – a sustainable, technical farming method. Together with Mitch Marescia, Roach co-founded Ezulwini Africa with the vision of spurring economic change through agriculture. Their initiative supports young black farmers by developing innovative aquaponic farms, enabling year-round production in Dullstroom, Mpumalanga.

Roach identified the challenges in South Africa’s agricultural sector and saw aquaponics as a sustainable solution. “I was more focused on making a difference through farming,” he explains. His extensive research into aquaponics revealed it as a highly technical and future-forward method.

Ezulwini Farms, now specializing in aquaponic farming, leverages the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants. Fish waste nourishes the plants, while the plants purify water for the fish, creating a closed system. This network of small, scalable commercial farms aims to empower communities across Africa.
