Man arrested for murder of North West businessman Gumbi

Police have apprehended a suspect related to the murder of Rustenburg businessman Ben Gumbi. North West Police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the arrest, which occurred in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday. The capture took place as part of a multi-disciplinary operation initiated after Gumbi’s daylight murder at a Rustenburg cafe. The suspect, Sibongiseni Ngubane, 33, was already facing charges of armed robbery and appeared in the Rustenburg District Court on September 14, 2023. He will remain in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on September 19, 2023.

Gumbi, 49, was shot on August 23 in what is believed to be a land dispute near the Sun City gambling hub. Gumbi and his business partner, Jacob Ngakane, had initiated the Bakubung Smart City Development project with the local traditional authority, a R3.2 billion venture set to include a shopping center, university, hospital, hotel, and sports facilities, and expected to create over 10,000 jobs.
