Man absconding from Mpumalanga court arrested on 76 charges

A 41-year-old man who escaped from a Mpumalanga court earlier this month has been re-arrested, the Mpumalanga Hawks confirmed. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, faces 76 charges, including fraud, theft, forgery, extortion, money laundering, and contempt of court. Previously a director at Mbhasi Trading, the man allegedly lured people into a fraudulent investment scheme between September 2020 and January 2021. Victims deposited money expecting profit shares but ultimately lost their investments, according to Hawks spokesman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi. The suspect was supposed to appear in court with his lawyer on June 4, 2024, but failed to do so. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued, and he was apprehended in Barberton on June 18, 2024, by the Secunda Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation Unit. Investigations are ongoing.
