Runners from various athletics clubs in Polokwane showcased extraordinary resilience during the 2024 Comrades Marathon, a grueling up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. Known for its challenging hills, the race features the infamous Polly Shortts climb after 50 miles, making it particularly daunting. Thabana Mokgohloa, president of Polokwane Athletics Club, praised their athletes’ efforts, noting that out of 182 participants, 176 completed the race, marking significant dedication and growth in the club. Remarkably, 82-year-old Johannes Mosehla finished the race, underscoring his enduring spirit since he has been running for 63 years. Colinda Potgieter, president of Pietersburg Road Runners, celebrated their club’s success with 17 out of 19 finishers, including medalists Johan van der Merwe and John Mokgane. Meanwhile, Mzansi Athletics Club saw 74 of their 77 runners complete the race in under 10 hours. Overall, the event highlighted Polokwane athletes’ tenacity and preparedness in enduring one of the world’s toughest marathons.
