Illegal mining operations halted in Free State, North West – defenseWeb

Police and SA Army Light Modern Brigade (LMB) soldiers conducted operations against illegal mining in the Free State and North West provinces, leading to over 50 arrests. These arrests stemmed from the unlawful possession of mining equipment, ‘gold-bearing material,’ and immigration law violations. In the Free State’s Lejweleputswa district, areas like Allanridge, Bronville, Vierfontein, Virginia, and Welcome saw the seizure of gold-bearing materials worth R800,000. Separately, in the North West Klerksdorp area, authorities confiscated 61 bags of gold-containing material and an additional 35 similar bags in three operations last week. North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, praised the police and soldiers for their diligent efforts. This crackdown sends a clear message that authorities are committed to combatting illegal mining activities.
