ICYMI: Foot and mouth disease is once again hitting the Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape faces another foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, threatening the agricultural sector and local livelihoods. Agri Eastern Cape CEO Brent McNamara criticized the government’s slow response, reporting confirmed FMD cases on two farms near Humansdorp and another in Zuurveld. Despite quarantine and vaccination efforts, blood samples from a cattle herd 17 miles away also tested positive.

The specific source of the SAT3 virus strain remains unknown, causing concern over its potential spread. Veterinarians and industry stakeholders have devised animal movement protocols that await approval from Dr. Mpho Maja, Director of Animal Health.

Dr. Cebisa Mnqeta of the Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development confirmed FMD on a Humansdorp dairy farm, with 70 affected animals. A joint operations center has been set up to manage containment. Farmers are urged to avoid unnecessary animal movements and consult veterinarians. Vaccination efforts on impacted farms are ongoing to curb the outbreak.
